The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together SATURDAY: KEY VERSE: Matthew 11:28 OBSERVATION: I make a plea for renewed Sabbath-keeping. As a nation, we cannot live like this, endlessly rushing about in a desperate frenzy, never stopping to enjoy the blessings of family and friends, unable to taste the fruits of life. We can change society by beginning a quiet revolution of change in ourselves and our families. Let us take a collective breath, rest, pray, meditate, walk, sing, eat and take time to share the unhurried company of those we love. Let us, for just one day, cease our desperate striving for more, and instead taste the blessings we have already been given, and give thanks. Religious traditions agree on this: God does not want us to be exhausted; God wants us to be happy. And so let us remember the Sabbath
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together FRIDAY: KEY VERSE: Exodus 34:21 OBSERVATION: Rest is not just a psychological convenience; it is a spiritual and biological necessity. Perhaps this is why, in most spiritual traditions, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply a lifestyle suggestion. It is a commandment, an ethical precept as serious as prohibitions against killing, stealing and lying. How can forgetting the Sabbath—forgetting to be restful, sing songs and find nourishment and delight—possibly be morally and socially dangerous?
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together THURSDAY: KEY VERSE: Ps. 127:2 OBSERVATION: Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the compass points that show us where to go. We lose the nourishment that gives us succor. We miss the quiet that gives us wisdom. Poisoned by the hypnotic belief that good things come only through tireless effort, we never truly rest. And for want of rest, our lives are in danger.
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together WEDNESDAY: KEY VERSE: Deuteronomy 5:12-15 OBSERVATION: Much of modern life is specifically designed to seduce our attention away from Sabbath rest. When we are in the world with our eyes wide open, the seductions are insatiable. Hundreds of channels of cable and satellite television; phones with multiple lines and call-waiting, begging us to talk to more than one person at a time; mail, e-mail and overnight mail; fax machines; billboards; magazines; newspapers; radio. For those of us with children, there are endless soccer practices, baseball games, homework, laundry, housecleaning, errands
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together TUESDAY: KEY VERSE: Colossians 2:16-17 OBSERVATION: Paul warned Gentile believers in Colossae not to let others force them to keep the Jewish Sabbath, since it is only a shadow of things to come, while the substance belongs to Christ (Colossians 2:16-17). Apparently, he expected Jewish Christians to continue observing the Sabbath regulations, but he did not require the same of Gentiles who entered the church.
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 8th – 13th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together MONDAY: KEY VERSE: Exodus 20:8-11 OBSERVATION: Sabbath is a discipline and practice in which we ask, consider, and answer the questions that will lead us into a complete and joyful life. As such, the Sabbath is a teaching that has the potential to redirect and transform all our existence, bringing it into more faithful alignment with God’s life-building and life-strengthening ways. (Norman Wirzba)
We had a wonderful “Do” service day today! This year we are focusing on discipleship and what better what then to do things for our community! Check out these amazing hard workers! #beingthechurch #thechapel
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 1st – 6th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together SATURDAY: KEY VERSE: Luke 9:62 OBSERVATION: What kind of person is fit for the kingdom? It is the disciple who is totally committed. And the person who is totally committed does not discuss the question of looking back. He puts his hand to the plow, never to look back to the way life was before he came to follow Jesus. He says, like Paul, ‘I have laid my hand to the plow and I press forward toward the mark of my high calling in Christ. No matter how tough the going will be, I have no thought of looking back.’ This is the standard of dedication that Jesus expects from His disciples.
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 1st – 6th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together FRIDAY: KEY VERSE: Luke 9:62 OBSERVATION: In serving the Lord, in plowing up the field, we have to expect persecutions. We will face many trials. In fact, in 2Thessalonians 1:5, Paul says that persecution is a clear sign of God’s coming judgment. This is an interesting verse for our lesson because Paul is saying virtually the same thing as the Lord Jesus.
REMINDER - GO Day on Sunday at 4pm Walking Path, Road Clean up, Kid Project, Fire Pit Remodel, Installing Pet Waste Stations, Garden Box Preparation. Many More. Items that will be helpful ... gloves, yard tools, (hand tools, weed eaters etc).
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 1st – 6th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together THURSDAY: KEY VERSE: Luke 9:62 OBSERVATION: In Hebrews 6:7, the Christian community is compared to a land that receives frequent rain and is cared for by God. A land that produces useful (euthetos) herbs, useful crops, receives God’s blessing. But if these people should become apostate, they would be like a field which was well watered and cultivated, but which then produced only worthless thorns and thistles. The end of a field that produces nothing but weeds is to be set on fire. It ends up being burned. Professing Christians whose lives produce only the equivalent of weeds will face the judgment of God.
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 1st – 6th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together WEDNESDAY: KEY VERSE: Luke 9:62 OBSERVATION: What does the plow do? It causes the ground to turn over. What is the ground, the field? In Matthew 13:38, the Lord tells us that the field is the world. This world is the field that we are plowing. How do we plow? Well, all the soil is turned over. Everything is turned upside down. This is exactly what was said of the apostles in Acts 17:6. These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. Therefore when we live the kind of life to which we are called, we will make a mark in this world. By our cross-centered lives, we are turning everything upside down.
The Chapel Family Bible Reading Program – July 1st – 6th Doing Life Together – Doing Life Together TUESDAY: KEY VERSE: Luke 9:62 OBSERVATION: The second thing to notice is this. Look at the words ‘putting the hand to the plow.’ These words tell us why we become a disciple of Jesus. Some people seem to have the understanding that becoming a Christian is simply a matter of having a certain religion that you embrace and that you use to comfort your heart. They like Christianity because it gives them a kind of moral and emotional support. To plow is to work the land. So to put the hand to the plow is to serve God.
